Poker hand comparisons

Compare a wheel, kickers, a board tie and standard high-hand categories.

Four fixed examples to check your understanding. There is no score, timer, streak or progress storage. You can read any explanation directly; completing an exercise is not a recommendation to gamble.

1. Standard high poker: which straight is higher, A–2–3–4–5 or 2–3–4–5–6?

Read the explanation without answering

The wheel A–2–3–4–5 is five-high. The other straight is six-high and wins. The ace is low only in the wheel; it does not make that straight ace-high.

2. Compare these five-card hands: 9♣ 9♦ A♠ K♥ 2♣ and 9♥ 9♠ A♦ Q♣ J♣. Which wins?

Read the explanation without answering

Both have one pair of nines and an ace kicker. Compare the next kicker: king beats queen. The final kicker is never reached, and suits do not break a standard poker tie.

3. Hold’em board: 10♣ J♦ Q♥ K♠ A♣. One player has 2♥ 3♦; the other has 4♥ 5♦. Who has the better hand?

Read the explanation without answering

Both play the same ace-high straight from the five board cards. Neither private holding improves it. Standard high-hand comparison is tied; a kicker cannot be added as a sixth card.

4. Under standard high-poker rankings, which beats an ordinary flush?

Read the explanation without answering

A full house ranks above an ordinary flush in standard high poker. Some short-deck conventions change that order, so this answer must not be transferred to an unspecified variant.
